Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr. (New York City, 20 oktober 1958) is een Amerikaanse acteur.

Hij is de zoon van de Deense Viggo Peter Mortensen Sr. en de Noorse-Amerikaanse Grace Gamble Atkinson. Toen Viggo 2 jaar oud was, verhuisde hij met zijn ouders naar Argentinië, waar hij tot zijn elfde heeft gewoond.

Toen zijn ouders gingen scheiden, ging zijn moeder weer in New York wonen, en Viggo ging met zijn vader in Kopenhagen, Denemarken wonen. Uiteindelijk verhuisden hij en zijn vader ook weer terug naar New York, waar hij zijn middelbare school afmaakte.

Daarna verhuisde Viggo terug naar Denemarken (in Esbjerg), waar hij vrachtwagenchauffeur werd, voordat hij uiteindelijk weer terug naar de VS verhuisde om acteur te worden. Hij heeft ook in The Lord of the Rings 1, 2 & 3 gespeeld.

Viggo spreekt vloeiend Engels, Deens en Spaans, maar hij spreekt ook Noors, Frans, Italiaans en redelijk Zweeds. Hij is naast acteur ook schilder en fotograaf.

Hij heeft, samen met zijn ex-vrouw Exene Cervenka, een zoon Henry Mortensen.
