Het eindtoernooi vindt elke vier jaar plaats in de maand juni en het begin van juli.

De eerste Europese Kampioenschappen Voetbal werden gehouden in 1960 in [[Frankrijk]]. De finale werd gespeeld tussen de [[Sovjet-Unie]] en [[Joegoslavië]]. Uiteindelijk werd het 2-1 voor de Sovjet-Unie. [[Nederland]] heeft één keer het EK gewonnen, in 1988. In 2010 is het WK voetbal, 2 jaar daarna het EK en 2 jaar daarna, dus in 2014, weer het WK. Spanje heeft samen met Duitsland de meeste keren gewonnen namelijk 3 keer. De meest recentste editie van een Europees toernooi was die van [[Europees kampioenschap voetbal 2016|2016 in Frankrijk]] en de [[Europees kampioenschap voetbal 2020|volgende editie]] is in 2021. Oorspronkelijk zou het toernooi in [[2020]] worden gehouden, maar door de uitbraak van het coronavirus is besloten om het toernooi 1 jaar op te schuiven. In 2012 deed Nederland weer mee met in de moeilijke poule met Denemarken, Duitsland en Portugal. Nederland was een van de favorieten die het EK kon winnen.

In 2010 stond Nederland in de finale van het WK; ze verloren toen nipt van Spanje in de verlengingen.

[[Nederland]] heeft ooit één titel behaald, dit was in [[1988]] bij het [[Europees kampioenschap voetbal 1988|EK in West-Duitsland]]. Nederland werd tevens een keer derde de troostfinale werd afgeschaft in 1980. in 1976 werden ze derde, maar in 1992, 2000 en 2004, konden ze dus geen derde worden. [[België]] werd in 1972 derde en in [[Europees kampioenschap voetbal 1980|1980]] tweede, wat tevens nog steeds de beste prestatie is voor België. Het EK 2020 wordt gehouden in 12 verschillende landen, waaronder Nederland. In Nederland wordt er in Amsterdam gespeeld, in de Johan Cruijff Arena. Hier kunnen 54.990 fans de wedstrijd bijwonen.

In 1996 werd op het EK in Engeland de golden goal ook wel ‘sudden death’ ingevoerd. Zowel tijdens dit EK, als het daaropvolgende EK van 2000, werd het toernooi gewonnen door een golden goal. In 2002 schafte de UEFA de golden goal weer af. Voor het EK van 2004 werd de silver goal geïntroduceerd. Tijdens dit EK is de silver goal alleen van toepassing geweest tijdens de halve finale tussen Griekenland en Tsjechië, hier won Griekenland de wedstrijd door in de laatste minuut van de eerste verlenging te scoren. Geschiedenis en opzet

Het Europees kampioenschap voetbal voor mannen, ook wel het Europees kampioenschap voetbal of kortweg het EK voetbal of EK genoemd, is een voetbalkampioenschap voor mannen in alleen de Europese landen. Het eindtoernooi vindt elke vier jaar plaats in de maand juni en het begin van juli.

Het wereldkampioenschap voetbal en het Europees kampioenschap worden steeds afgewisseld, waardoor elke twee jaar een van beide is. De meest recentste editie van een Europees toernooi was die van 2016 in Frankrijk en de volgende editie is in 2021. Oorspronkelijk zou het toernooi in 2020 worden gehouden, maar door de uitbraak van het coronavirus is besloten om het toernooi 1 jaar op te schuiven. In 1960 werd de eerste editie van het Europese kampioenschap georganiseerd in Frankrijk.

Duitsland en Spanje zijn met beiden 3 titels de landen die het vaakst een Europees kampioenschap wisten te winnen, de huidige kampioen is sinds 2016 Portugal. Nederland heeft ooit één titel behaald, dit was in 1988 bij het EK in West-Duitsland. Nederland werd tevens een keer derde de troostfinale werd afgeschaft in 1980. in 1976 werden ze derde, maar in 1992, 2000 en 2004, konden ze dus geen derde worden. België werd in 1972 derde en in 1980 tweede, wat tevens nog steeds de beste prestatie is voor België. Het EK 2020 wordt gehouden in 12 verschillende landen, waaronder Nederland. In Nederland wordt er in Amsterdam gespeeld, in de Johan Cruijff Arena. Hier kunnen 54.990 fans de wedstrijd bijwonen.

Deelnemende landen

Het eerste EK werd in 1960 in Frankrijk gehouden. De finale werd toen gespeeld tussen de Sovjet-Unie en Joegoslavië. Uiteindelijk werd het 2-1 voor de Sovjet-Unie. Nederland kwam niet door de kwalificatie.
