West Virginia is een van de vijftig staten van de Verenigde Staten. De staat ligt in het oosten van het land. Het grenst in het noorden aan Pennsylvania, in het noordoosten aan Maryland, in het zuidoosten en zuiden aan Virginia, in het zuidwesten aan Kentucky en in het noordwesten aan Ohio. De afkorting van West Virginia is WV. De bijnaam is 'The Mountain State'. Dat betekent 'de Bergstaat', omdat West Virginia in de Appalachen ligt. De hoofdstad van de staat is Charleston.
In het verleden was West Virginia onderdeel van Virginia. Tijdens de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog werd de staat gesplitst. Dit kwam doordat Virginia vóór de slavernij was, terwijl West Virginia tegen de slavernij was. West Virginia koos daarom de kant van de Noordelijke Staten. Toen Virginia zich afscheidde in 1861, scheidde West Virginia zich weer van Virginia af. In 1863 werd West Virginia officieel een eigen staat. Na de oorlog is dit niet meer teruggedraaid. West Virginia is een belangrijke staat voor de mijnbouw en houtkap. Tegenwoordig is het een van de armste staten van het land.
Tegenwoordig staat West Virginia bekend als een "rode staat". Dit betekent dat de Republikeinse Partij de staat bijna altijd wint. West Virginia wordt gerekend tot de Midden-Atlantische Staten.
