De Europese Unie is een internationale organisatie die bestaat uit wel 27 verschillende landen. Die komen allemaal uit Europa, uitgezonderd Cyprus in Azië. Het is bedoeld als een economische, politieke en democratische samenwerking in al deze landen. Ze heeft haar eigen vlag, namelijk een blauwe met 12 gele sterren in een vorm van een cirkel. Er zijn enkel 12 sterren op de vlag, omdat de EU na een aantal jaren dat het pas bestond 12 landen had. Daarna is de vlag niet meer veranderd en zo gebleven. De EU heeft verschillende hoofdkantoren enzovoort. Alles wordt echter wel bestuurt vanuit de Belgische hoofdstad Brussel. Het Europese Parlement heeft twee hoofdkantoren, één in Brussel en één in Straatsburg (Frankrijk). De Europese Centrale Bank is echter gevestigd in Frankfurt am Main, Duitsland. Brussel en Luxemburg-Stad zijn de zetels van de Europese Rekenkamer. Ook de Europese Investeringsbank zetelt in Luxemburg-Stad. In het jaar 2010 had de hele organisatie wel 501.259.840 inwoners.
